Origin Stories: Tempisque – Named for Guanacaste's Great River
The Tempisque River, one of Guanacaste's defining natural landmarks, has shaped the region for centuries. Flowing from Costa Rica's volcanic highlands through forests, farmland, and wetlands before reaching the Gulf of Nicoya, it has helped shape both the landscape and the communities that call this region home.
Like the river itself, Tempisque is steady, balanced, and full of life. This 100% Arabica coffee is roasted to a balanced medium profile, delivering notes of chocolate, caramel, bright citrus, and vanilla in a clean, approachable cup.
The Clarity of a Washed Coffee
We chose a traditional washed process because we wanted the coffee itself to be the star.
After harvest, the fruit is removed from each coffee cherry before the beans are fermented, washed, and dried. Removing the fruit before drying lets the bean's natural character shine, creating the clean, balanced profile that has made washed coffees a favorite around the world.
In Tempisque, that means chocolate forms the foundation while caramel adds sweetness. Bright citrus brings lift, and vanilla rounds everything into a smooth, approachable cup that's easy to enjoy yet rewarding to explore.

Why "Tempisque"?
The Tempisque River is one of the great lifelines of Guanacaste.
Its waters support farms, wildlife, wetlands, and the communities that have depended on it for generations. Portions of the river pass through the Tempisque Conservation Area and the wetlands surrounding Palo Verde National Park, one of Costa Rica's most important ecological regions.
We chose the name because it felt like the coffee. Steady. Balanced. Full of life.
Just like the river, Tempisque brings together distinct elements into one harmonious whole. Chocolate, caramel, citrus, and vanilla each have their place, creating a cup that's complete without any one flavor overpowering the others.
Every Detail Has Meaning
-
The Blue Color: The metallic blue packaging reflects the movement and depth of the Tempisque River, connecting the coffee visually to the landscape that inspired its name.
- The Front Seal: The crocodile crossing flowing water honors one of the Tempisque River's most recognizable inhabitants. Visitors to the river are often greeted by signs reading "¡Cuidado! Cocodrilos." The surrounding lines represent the river's current, while the spiral symbolizes movement, continuity, and the journey from the mountains of Guanacaste to the Gulf of Nicoya.
-
Transparent Coffee Details: Every bag clearly identifies the process, roast level, variety, altitude, tasting notes, and organoleptic profile. Tempisque is a 100% Arabica Costa Rica 95 coffee, grown between 700 and 1,000 meters, traditionally washed, sun-dried, and professionally cupped at 83 points.
- Our Certifications: The PYME Costa Rica seal recognizes the small-business roots behind Coffee Balam, while ICAFE and our Life Zone certification connect Tempisque to the quality, heritage, and Blue Zone landscape of Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula.
Beyond the Bag
Tempisque reminds us that great coffee doesn't have to be loud to be memorable.
A carefully executed washed process doesn't transform the coffee, it reveals it. Every decision, from harvest through roasting, is made to preserve the balance, sweetness, and clarity already present in the bean.
The name honors a river that has sustained Guanacaste for centuries. Every cup is a small connection to that landscape and the people who continue to grow coffee there today.
Every purchase also supports Coffee Balam's larger mission. Five percent of profits help fund the Committee for the Culture and Preservation of Matambugueño Traditions, supporting the continuation of Chorotega culture in the community connected to our coffee.
Brew Tempisque and discover why a beautifully washed Costa Rican coffee remains one of the purest expressions of origin.
